PERFORMINGUNIT is new performance group founded in Breda in the beginning of 2000. The group itself consists of experienced professionals who share diverse cultural traditions and artistic histories.
In the first place, we develop diverse strategies and practices in the area of performing arts.
We regard all our creations primarily as communication modes.
PERFORMINGUNIT approaches the performing arts in a broad way; therefore our working area is performing arts and its linkage to interdisciplinary area. Instead of defining ourselves as either theatre or dance group, we wish to dissolve this opposition by creating interdisciplinary works.
Our point of departure is research in the area of performing art, based upon two questions: ‘What the body can do?’ and ‘How to do things with words?’ We elaborate our performing language as a language of action, distinct from other art disciplines. Our performing style merges intuitive and academic performing grammar. Accordingly, no specific theatre or dance style introduced.
PERFORMINGUNIT is committed to an art that articulates questions and does not explain or give answers. Our work explores the ideas of human condition especially focusing the issues of contemporary identity; namely, contemporary individual whose fragility increases as s/he is driven by the world’s complexity. We combine materials of different sources and transform them into our own performing language that is defined by a simple query: ‘Wherefore is human?’
Our working method pursues fundamental simplicity. We refuse an idea of ‘ideal’ performance, and regard our works as ‘unfinished and changeable. Therefore, we deliver our creations within ‘session’ mode as platform from which audience can then fashion their own experiences
